NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION, FIRE PROTECTION STANDARD FOR MARINAS AND BOAT YARDS

  • The provisions of the "National Fire Protection Association, Fire Protection Standard for Marinas and Boat Yards", NFPA 303, 1995 Edition, are amended, deleted, or corrected as follows; and the following provisions supersede the part of the text of the "National Fire Protection Association Fire Protection Standard for Marinas and Boat Yards" as indicated:
    (1) Strike subsection 4-5.1 and substitute:
    "4-5.1. Standpipe systems, where installed, shall be in accordance with NFPA 14, "Standard for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems" and the following requirements:
    (a) Class I standpipe system shall be installed on all piers and bulkheads where the hose lay distance from the fire apparatus exceeds 150 feet. Exception: Existing piers equipped with standpipe systems."
    (b) One 2½-inch female connection shall be located on the shoreline at the beginning of the pier or wharf. The areas immediately surrounding and/or adjacent to these connections are to be designated as fire lanes and parking in these areas is to be prohibited. A 2½ inch × 2½ inch × 4 inches FDC is not required.
    (c) One 2½-inch male connection with shut-off valve shall be located on the pier every 100 feet or fraction thereof as measured from the beginning of the pier. Size of the standpipe shall be such that 250 gpm can be delivered without friction loss greater than 15 psi per 100 feet. Minimum pipe size shall be 2 inches. All threading on 2½-inch outlets shall be national standard thread and shall be provided with caps and chains. Exception: Hose racks, hoses, and standpipe cabinets shall not be required on piers and bulkheads.
    (2) Add new subparagraph 4-5.4.1:
    "4-5.4.1. Plastic pipe may be used in the installation of dry standpipe systems on piers provided the following requirements are met:
    (a) The plastic pipe shall be at least Schedule 40, P.V.C. approved for a working pressure of 250 psi.
    (b) Quarter turn main line shut-offs shall be provided at each 2½-inch discharge on the far side of the discharge valve with the exception of the most remote discharge.
    (c) A Fire Department standpipe connection must be provided at the beginning of the pier. The connection shall be a 2½-inch female national standard thread connection with a cap and chain.
    (d) Durable signs must be attached at each main line shut-off to read as follows: "Main Line Valve."
    (e) Drains shall be provided so that the entire system can be drained after use.
    (f) All piping and fittings must be approved for a working pressure of 175 psi.
    (g) Each 2½-inch discharge shall be mounted between 18 inches and 24 inches above the pier decking.
    (h) Each 2½-inch discharge shall be equipped with a 2½-inch national standard thread male connection with shut-off valve, cap and chain.
    (i) A representative of the Fire Marshal's Office shall witness a hydrostatic test of 200 psi.
    (3) Strike section 4-6 and substitute:
    "4-6. Hydrants and water supplies. Hydrants and water supplies for fire protection in marinas and boat yards shall be provided in accordance with NFPA 13 Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems; NFPA 14, Standard for the Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems; NFPA 20 Standard for the Installation of Centrifugal Fire Pumps; and NFPA 24, Standard for the Installation of Private Fire Service Mains and Their Appurtenances or Other Water Supplies approved by the authority having jurisdiction."
